The Misarlon Order

This is the stuff of pure legend and myth. Bards sing stories of them and drunkards have no end of tales; mothers threaten their children with their retribution and kings have changed policy because of fear; but in the end very little is actually known.

The story in the public sphere goes that, during the Great War, the Elves (some say Dwarves) formed a secret group of elite assassins named the Misarlon Order. The Misarlon were used to take out nobles, generals, renown heroes, and sometimes even entire towns. Some say they were nicknamed the "Deadly Shadows", because by the light of day, no one could ever find evidence of them aside from a pile of slain corpses.

Historians point out that, despite the folk tales, there has never been any evidence that such a group existed. For example, there is the story of the "Scourge of Seven" in which an entire town was dispatched in one night by seven of the Misarlon. In fact, the town named in the tale still exists and there is no record of a massacre in the area.

The origin of the myths is hard to explain, but there was a temple on Mt. Misarlon in the Ascension Range of the Old Kingdom, so it is suspected that is where the name came from. Many an ambitious scholar has tried to find the ruins of this temple, in the hopes of finding conclusive evidence about the myths, one way or another. The problem is that there are too many possible sites as that mountain range is riddled with ruins.
